June
13 - 15, 2008, was a remarkable weekend at Holy Angels. A full
calendar of major events was arranged around our celebration
of Juneteenth (full, legal emancipation of slaves in the course
of the Civil War), and Fathers' Day.
A special edition
of Holy Angels' famous fish fry kicked off the festivities on
Friday evening, complete with a proclamation from the office
of the Mayor of Indianapolis.
Saturday
began with a reading of the Mayor's proclamation, and of the
proclamation by Abraham Lincoln finally freeing the slaves.
The latter was accompanied by a stirring reenactment by men
in full Civil War Union uniforms, portraying African American
soldiers of the period. Booths, exhibits, Corvettes and classic
cars, public service information, and children's amusements,
all dotted the parish grounds. Indoors were soul food dinners,
deflectable desserts, more information and sales booths, strolling
guitarist, electronic gaming competition, and African dance.
All the while a DJ provided appropriate background music for
attendees. Saturday ended with a "Gospel Explosion"
featuring two local gospel groups, a praise dance, and Holy
Angels' own Gospel Choir.
Sunday celebrated
Fathers' Day, with a wonderful, spirited, and musical liturgy
at 9:00 and 11:00 featuring a Women's Gospel Chorus made up
of choir members and additional women from the parish. Following
each mass, the Elites served up delicious strawberry treats
for fathers and others.
It took many
parishioners and friends from the community to make this such
a remarkable weekend. Harambee! to all who participated. Flyer
