Dear Parents and Guardians,

Important Reminder About 2010-2011 Registration- Letters of intent for the 2010-2011 school year are being sent home again with this newsletter. In order to hold a place for your child(ren) for next year, the letter of intent must be completed and returned with the non-refundable $25.00 fee by the 16th of March. Your child(ren)'s education is very important. Try to do this as soon as possible.

School Delays or cancellations- In the event of inclement weather, please tune in to Channel 6, Channel 8, and Channel 13 for postings. As always, if you feel like it is too dangerous for you to bring your child due to weather conditions and the location of where you live, call the school to let us know your child(ren) will not be in that day. Remember a two hour delay would mean that your child should be at school at 9:45 a.m.

Indiana Time Change- At 2:00 a.m. on Suncday, March 14th, the time will spring forward one hour. Don't forget to change your clocks!

Tips for Homework- This time of year, some students may lose motivation to study and complete homework. Critical information is taught between now and the end of the school year. Here are some points to remember:

  • Research continues to show that effective homework is beneficial by providing a combination of the practice of skills and a review of material taught in the classroom.
  • Homework can also assist in your child's development of responsibility, self-discipline and study habits. It is assigned to give your child the opportunity to enhance learning skills. Homework is an extension of what is being taught in the classroom.
  • Your child should know exactly what is expected of him/her in an assignment. If you find that this is not the case, please contact your child's teacher to talk about how to help your child understand the expectations and be responsible for them.
  • If your child's teacher contacts you concerning incomplete, inaccurate, or missing homework, please work with the teacher and your child to remedy the situation as soon as possible. Homework can be a critical component in your child's overall assessment grade.

Again, homework is an important component of your child's educational progress. We encourage you to help your child to work toward completion of assignments daily. It is o.k. to answer a few questions and give your child direction, but the actual work should be completed by your child.

Reminder About Make-up Day- This is just a reminder that school will be in session on Friday, May 28th to make up for the Archbishop's free day.

Thanks for your help as we work together to educate your child(ren),

Ms. Cynthia L. Greer
Principal

From Our Social Worker, Mrs. Montgomery:

CHILDREN AND TELEVISION

Watching television can be educational, informative and entertaining. However, it is our responsibility, as parents, to control and limit our children's exposure to television. Some questions regarding TV you might consider are:
…Do you know the rating of the show your child is watching?
…Does the TV show contain harsh language, violence, or sexual scenes?
…Is your child viewing shows that are age appropriate and for general audiences?
…Does it matter how long your child watches TV?
…Does it matter how close your child sits to the TV?
…Does overexposure to TV really cause attention deficit?
…Is TV negatively affecting your child's morals, behavior, or self-control?
…Does excessive exposure to TV violence, bloodshed, horror, etc, increase physical abuse?
…Are commercials influencing your child's attitude towards what they need and want?
…Is your child's inactivity (while watching TV), attributing to his or her weight problem?

Instead of watching so much television one could try the following:
…Read a book or magazine
…Learn how to play a musical instrument
…Help prepare meals
…Work on an art project
…Talk to family members (share family stories/history, discuss school day, discuss how to problem solve or control anger, etc).
…Learn how to play chess
…Write feelings (journal); write poems, short stories, etc.
…Exercise or dance to music
The possibilities are limitless!

Note: Search for the word "television", once you are on these sites

We can not control what goes on in other homes; but, we can surely take control in our own homes by saying "NO", to excessive TV, video games, and time spent on the computer. Let's send the message to our children that they are more important to us than television is.
