Name of Ministry: Spiritual Life

Description of Ministry:

To enhance parishioners’ spiritual life through the Mass, the Sacraments, special life events and other spiritual growth activities.

 

Actions to Accomplish Ministry:

·        Liturgy: Recruit chairpersons and committee members to implement plans for the event and evaluate following the event to determine if the purpose was fulfilled.

·        Choir:

o       Follow the directions of the Minister of Music by learning new songs to be sung for Mass and participate in various community events.

o       Spread God’s word through music within our Church and throughout the community. 

·        Eucharistic Ministers:

o       Train new ministers chosen by the Pastor to serve during Mass and take communion to the homebound.

o        Provide two In-Service training sessions annually.

o       Evaluate and submit names of newly trained ministers for commissioning by the Archbishop.

o       Assist in distribution of communion at Mass and outreach to homebound through distribution of communion, listening to their concerns and informing Pastor of needs. 

·        Lectors: Proclaim God’s Word at Mass and introduce the various readings during Mass.

·        Ushers:

o       Arrive early before Mass to prepare to meet and greet all who enter the Church.

o       Recruit, schedule, and train new ushers to perform their duties. Captains are assigned for each Mass.

o       Welcome visitors by greeting at church door and provide hospitality to all who enter for Mass. 

·        Revival:

o       Develop a theme relative to parish needs; secure a date, vibrant, spirit-filled preacher, readers, and choir.

o       Provide different out-reach for preaching and music to the parish for spiritual growth and development.

·        Prayer Line:

o       Receive prayer requests and pass to team leaders the needs of the parishioners.

o       Parishioners may request special prayers. This ministry humbly lifts up those needs to the Lord.

 

Number of Participants Needed:

·        Liturgy: 3 to 5 participants per event.

·        Choir: 30 participants needed per Mass. 

·        Eucharistic Ministers: 40 participants are needed. 

·        Lectors: 30 Lectors needed.

·        Ushers: 18 to 24 participants needed.

·        Revival: At least 7 participants needed.

·        Prayer Line: Unlimited

 

Talents Needed:

·        Liturgy: No experience needed but a strong commitment to spiritual life with some organizational skills and creative thinking.

·        Choir: A desire to praise God through song and music.

·        Eucharistic Ministers:

o       commitment to responsibilities and love  

o       dedication to faith, willingness to listen to the needs and concerns of the homebound

o       enthusiasm about your own spiritual growth

 

·        Lectors:

o       Reading skills, pronunciation, delivery (communicate the meaning of the text), projection of the voice

o       Willingness to be educated in the scriptural messages

o       Responsibility to prepare and keep to schedule

·        Ushers:

o       Willingness to distribute bulletins,

o       Welcome all with a smile and positive attitude

o       Escort people to a seat

o       Collect offering contributions,

o       Enjoy helping others

o       Responsible to keep to schedule and

o       Abide by needs of church and decisions of the Usher Board

·        Revival:

o       Have knowledge of parish needs

o       Open to ideas, suggestions and feelings of others

o       Maintain confidentiality within the group

o       Know music and musicians

o       Have good communication skills and

o       Recognize good readers

·        Prayer Line: Willingness to pray for others

 

Time Commitment:

·        Liturgy:

o       Three 1-hour meetings over a 3-month period

o       Advisory Group meets 1-hour a month

 

·        Choir:

o       Approximately 6 hours per week

o       Rehearsals are 2 hours every Tuesday 7pm–9pm 

o       Commit to sing both Sunday Masses at 9am and 11am. 

o       The choir does accept outside engagements to sing.

·        Eucharistic Ministers: 

o       Depending upon communicants, 2 to 4 hours per month

o       Two annual 2-hour In-Service meetings

o       Team members add 4 to 6 hours for planning session

·        Lectors: Outside of Mass, two 2-hour In-Service meetings annually plus own personal preparation time

·        Ushers: During Mass and 3 annual meetings

·        Revival: 8 to 12 weeks annually

·        Prayer Line: No specific time limit

 

Financial Support:

·        Liturgy: $75 from the Parish budget. Sometimes the participants donate items and talents (e.g. prayer books, wrapping paper, etc.)

·        Choir:

o       Director’s salary

o       $50 music material

o       $150 instrument repair

·        Eucharistic Ministers:

o       $75 for material and In-Service expenses

o       $5  deposit by participants for pyx and burse, which is refundable when turned in

o       Small charge for replacement booklets

·        Lectors:

o       Small amount in budget under Liturgy Committee

o       Participants purchase a St. Joseph Sunday Missal for their personal use and preparation

·        Ushers:

o       Small amount in budget for visitor ribbons

o       Participants also donate pens, pencils, pads and straight pins

·        Revival: 

o       Travel money for preacher/speaker and stipend for preaching

o       Room and board is usually at the Rectory.

o       When a reception is held, sometimes the participants will help pay.

o       Chairperson pays for the telephone calls and mailings to persons being considered for Revival.

·        Prayer Line: No financial assistance needed at this time

 

Vision:

·        Liturgy:

o       Begin an effective organizational plan for committee to meet monthly to discuss upcoming events

o       We can realize savings on merchandise with an advance start. Announcements in Church and in the bulletin will heighten the awareness of parishioners.

·        Choir:

o       Take the Music Ministry on the road to visit Nursing Homes and homebound people. 

o       Using the choir to educate the Community about our African American Catholic Church will be more intense for the choir participants.

·        Eucharistic Ministers:

o       Ministers will be encouraged to deepen their faith through reading and participation in programs offered by Holy Angels and the Archdiocese. 

o       More faithful participation in the two In-Service sessions will be emphasized.

o       Ministers will explain to the homebound the necessity to financially support the church and its efforts to serve others. 

·        Lectors:

o       A search for new training materials will be made to help stimulate this ministry.

o       To heighten awareness of Archdiocesan ministries, the commentators could help with announcements, serve as witnesses, promote the United Catholic Appeal and be prepared to explain other shared ministries such as the Homeless Shelter.  

·        Ushers:

o       Continue to train the youth for 5th Sunday Youth Mass and recruit youth to fill-in for missing ushers at Mass.

o       There is a great need to use our resources of youth.

o       Ushers could explain the United Catholic Appeal to people who inquire.

·        Revival:

o       Focus on larger turnout for Revival.

o       An early appeal to parishioners for their support by using positive, exciting appeals to others 

o       This committee needs a set amount of money from parish budget.

·        Prayer Line:
Since there is power in prayer, an invitation will be extended for all parishioners to become a part of this committee during this year and to open up their hearts and use this most powerful tool.
