        May Crowning

May is dedicated to Mary, the mother of Jesus. As is customary at Holy Angels and in many Catholic churches, we begin the month by crowning a statue of Mary with a floral crown, and honoring Mary with flowers around her statue before the altar. Our statue of Mary is in an African style connecting with cultural roots of may of our parishioners, and our style of worship. Children of the parish brought the crown and flowers to the altar on the first Sunday of the month, and offered prayerful tribute to our Blessed Mother. Music for the day's liturgies incorporated song in praise of Mary. The rosary is prayed before each Sunday mass throughout the month. (Ceremony photos courtesy of Eugene Hawkins)

Pentecost
Mothers' Day

In this year an unusual coincidence occurred in liturgical and secular calendars. The great feast of Pentecost fell on the same day as Mothers' Day. So at Holy Angels we celebrated both with deference to commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles.
The liturgy itself focused on the theme of the Holy Spirit and the effects of the third Person of the Holy Trinity upon the Apostles and upon ourselves throughout history. Readings and songs honored the Holy Spirit in the celebration of the holy mass. The Holy Angels Men's Chorus provided the music for the liturgy instead of the full choir and men of the parish provided the lay ministry. This custom honors Mothers' Day allowing the women of the parish to participate in worship with no formal duties of ministry on this day. A special tribute to Mothers was recited by Tony Chapman to complete the ceremonies. The pastor, men's chorus, and many parishioners wore red to signify that Holy Angels was "on fire" with the Holy Spirit.
