The principal reading at each mass is from one of the Gospels. Because of the special importance of this spoken lesson, the Gospel reading is "elevated" in several ways. First, the commentator calls the congregation to stand in respect for the reading of the Good News according to our Savior, Jesus the Christ. Secondly, the reading of the Gospel is reserved to the priest. And finally, the choir often introduces and concludes the reading with an Alleluia! Before reading, the priest bows before the altar, and walks to the pulpit carrying the scriptures for the day. He then intones the scriptural reference, and blesses himself (along with the parishioners) on the forehead, lips, and heart, asking to be worthy to speak this Good News.
