One
of the lay members of the church assists at mass from a smaller
reading stand to the congregation's left. This designated parishioner
offers commentary at the opening and at specific parts along the way.
The commentator also leads the congregation in a responsorial Psalm from
the old testament in the early part of the service - during the liturgy
of the word. Also, at the offertory the commentator leads the congregation
in offering our individual and collective petitions to God. Toward the
end of the service, any visitors who have identified themselves to the
ushers will be recognized by the commentator.
