On
Holy Saturday, the night was chilly, much as we might imagine
it from the scriptural accounts of the weekend of Jesus's
death. But we gathered to celebrate new light in the form
of the paschal flame symbolizing the risen Christ. Hardy souls
gathered in front of our school for the lighting and blessing
of the new fire and the Easter candle, beautifully decorated
by Esther Davis.
The group
proceeded to the door of the darkened church whereby Father
Taylor carried the Pascal Candle up the main aisle, pausing
three times as he sang "Light of Christ," the congregation
responding "Thanks be to God" and genuflecting.
Parishioners' candles were lighted from the new fire and Daryl
Whitley sang the first lines of the Exsultet
"Rejoice heavenly powers! Sing choirs of angels! Exult,
all creation around God's throne! Jesus Christ, our King is
risen! Sound the trumpet of salvation!" After several
verses, Father Taylor recited the remainder of this lengthy
and joyful Easter proclamation.
Old
Testament scriptures were recited with musical responses from
the choir. Then the church was illuminated dramatically as
the choir under new director Vincent Howard sang the "Gloria".
Father Taylor's sermon continued the theme of lesser figures
in the Holy Week story, focusing this time on sometimes maligned
Mary Magdalene, one of our first evangelizers.
We welcomed
on new adult member to our parish who was confirmed by Father
Taylor at the service. The Baptismal font was blessed, litany
of the saints was sung by Reggie Ash, and the congregation
was sprinkled with baptismal water. The Eucharist completed
the late night celebration of the resurrection, and of our
salvation, with our member leading the congregation in the
reception of Holy Communion. |
