Christmas
2009 - 2010
The
Catholic observance of Christmas is not just one day, but a long
held tradition of celebration which begins with the evening mass(es)
on Christmas Eve, and extends through the third Sunday after Christmas
including the Feast of the Holy Family, the Solemnity of Mary/Word
Day of Prayer (January 1), the Epiphany, and the Baptism of Jesus.
Once the Advent Wreath and Jesse Tree (upper left photo) are removed
after the 4th Sunday of Advent, the mood, the liturgy, and the
decorations of the church transform from anticipation to joyful
celebration. From the first view of the nativity scene, missing
the Christ child figure, the medley of Christmas carols from the
choir, to the ceremonial arrival of the baby Jesus, through nearly
three weeks of masses each with distinctive music and readings,
the season worships the newborn Savior. Even the nativity transforms
from the Holy Family and shepherds through the arrival of the
Magi figures accompanied by "We Three Kings" to reflect
the cycle of observances. It is truly a blessed time in the church,
marking the beginning of the salvation story.
