In
our second full Christmas season with Father Kenneth Taylor, the
liturgical celebrations began with midnight mass. Poinsettias
and pine trees were among the symbols which marked this as a unique
time in the church year and in our salvation history. The Gospel
Choir sang a variety of traditional Christmas Carols beginning
at 11:30 pm on Christmas Eve. With the arrival of midnight, the
mass began with the procession to the altar, singing of "Prepare
Ye The Way of the Lord", and the reverent carrying in of
the statue of the Christ child. The nativity scene, with its rocky
cave appearance and Christmas trees bedecked in white lights,
was blessed by Pastor Taylor before the joyful proclamation of
Scripture readings
told the story of the coming of the Messiah. The customary parts
of the mass followed, with a special meditation after communion.
The haunting strains of "Mary Did You Know" were accompanied
by a dramatic liturgical dance, depicting the unique roles and
relationships of Mary and the Son of God. Thus began the 12 days
of celebration of the birth of Jesus as a very large congregation
departed the church for their homes and family celebrations.
