Each
year, we begin the Triduum, the three special days of Holy Week,
with our celebration of the Seder Supper, the "Last Supper"
when Jesus instituted the Eucharist with his apostles. It is the
ancient, Jewish Passover meal before His passion and death. Father
Taylor as head of our church family, led the symbolic portion
of the meal, with scripture readings, songs, participation by
our youths, and explanation and use of special symbols of mazzah,
wine, lamb, and herbs. The Passover meal concludes with lamb stew
and blessings before we move to the church for celebration of
the Eucharist. Our candidate for the deaconate, Brad Anderson,
closed the Seder as Father Taylor prepared for the liturgy to
follow. We were excited to have Sister Mary Quinn back with us
for the liturgies from Holy Thursday through Easter Sunday morning.
The Holy Thursday liturgy
is a joyous time, with gold and white colors, renewal of the "Glory
to God", and special rituals. Among these are the washing
of feet by the priest, renewal of priestly commitment, and reception
of holy oils for the various sacramental uses. The principal celebration
of course is the renewal of the Eucharist. But in the midst of
this joy, we know and anticipate the Passion of the Christ which
will happen on the next day, Good Friday. The Blessed Sacrament
is carried out of the church in solemn procession to the strains
of "Praise we Christ's Immortal Body!" The procession
including the Eucharistic ministers exited the altar to an elaborately
decorated tabernacle and altar in the small chapel It is referred
to as the "repository", where Blessed Sacrament is honored
and adoration was available until midnight.
