On
Good Friday, we commemorate the passion and death of Jesus
the Christ. In the late afternoon, worshippers gathered
in the stark church - most adornments had been removed -
the Eucharist is in our small chapel - serving as the repository.
The painful crown of thorns and empty tabernacle symbolize
the solemnity of the day. Priest and altar servers entered
silently and prostrated themselves before the bare altar.
A series of readings culminate in the reading of the Passion.
There is no mass, but a homily appropriate to the sadness
of this day gave spiritual direction. After a series of
prayers, Father Taylor carried a heavy, rough hewn cross
from the back of the church to the altar, and positioned
it for veneration. The congregation filed forward, dropping
nails representing our sins into a metal pail, before kissing
or reverently touching the cross. Then prayers preceded
the Eucharist, distribution of Holy Communion only in the
form of the hosts consecrated on the previous day. The remaining
hosts were removed to the repository. After meditation and
prayer, all exited silently to await the celebration of
the Resurrection on Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday.
