The
Holy Week journey in 2006 continued at Holy Angels with
the observance of our Seder Supper and Holy Thursday liturgy.
The Seder meal unites Old and New Testament traditions as
well as Judaism and Christianity. Father Taylor presided
as our "head of the household," explaining the
historical and scriptural significance of each part of the
ritual meal. Young and adult parishioners also participated
in individual readings, as well as the entire gathering
in communal parts. This is truly a family and community
event, commemorating the night when the angel of death passed
over the homes of the Israelites in Egyptian captivity,
and the Exodus to freedom in the Promised Land. The Passover
meal also carries a continuing message of freedom for all
people. This was also the Last Supper which Jesus shared
with the apostles before his crucifixion. The 2006 Seder
was one of our best attended Passover celebrations in recent
years - there seemed not to be a vacant seat in the Parish
Center.
Following
the Seder Supper, parishioners and guests assembled in Holy
Angels Church for the commemoration of the institution of
the Eucharist, which was the very culmination of the Last
Supper. At this very elaborate celebration of the holy mass,
incense, holy oils, and special music accentuated this liturgy.
Father Taylor gave a stirring homily on the old and new
covenants between God and his people, and challenged us
to truly live in the New Covenant of love and forgiveness.
Other special aspects of this night included the renewal
of priestly commitment, washing of the feet of parishioners,
receiving of the holy oils used in particular sacraments,
and of course, the celebration of the Eucharist.
At the conclusion,
the Blessed Sacrament is taken in solemn procession from
the church to the strains of "Praise We Christ's Immortal
Body!" The
Blessed Sacrament remains with us in the Repository - our
small chapel, beautifully decorated, and lighted by candles
for the time through Good Friday. The church remained open
for adoration until midnight.
